Sweet Aurora

We arrived in Iceland and promptly located a sugary treat. At Sweet Aurora in downtown Reykjavík, we enjoyed a variety of confections including the custardy cannelé and intricate, delicious Birki, pictured here. The Birki is composed of birch and milk chocolate crémeux and brownie wrapped in a hazelnut ganache, on top of buckwheat sablé. Topped with a decorative, chocolate leaf, this dessert was a heavenly little work of art. Not pictured are the yummy espresso drinks that warmed us up during our acclimation to Iceland’s biting winds and sporadic rain.
Kaffi Loki

Later in the day, we went on our second food adventure (of many) at Kaffi Loki, also in downtown Reykjavík. This photo is of the food and drink we had there including cubes of fermented shark pierced with a miniature Icelandic flag, Icelandic Brennivín, fresh garden salad, dried fish, rye bread, flat bread, trout tarte, Smjör butter, and rye bread ice cream. Trying fermented shark was at the top of our “to-do” list, and it was just as strange and ammonia forward as we had anticipated. What we didn’t anticipate was how much more rye bread, smoked trout, and Smjör we would consume on this trip- which was A LOT. Thankfully, we were both thrilled with the recurrence.
