Snæfellsnes

Laren in a pink jacket stands on a narrow, weathered pier extending into a calm sea under a cloudy sky.

Leaving Fossatún was bittersweet, but our next destination, Snæfellsnes, was well worth our departure. This peninsula, located on the west coast of Iceland, is a multifaceted dreamscape that is home to some of Iceland’s most dramatic rock formations.

While exploring in the village of Hellnar, we encountered an alluring cave on a beach of large, smooth stones and this decomposing pier that beckoned us to walk out onto it.

After leaving Hellnar, we drove on the most treacherous road we encountered the entire trip to Svörtuloft lighthouse. Laren found this drive thrilling but Vim developed hives from how nervous it made them. Regardless, we both oggled over the dangerous beauty of Svörtuloft and the surrounding cliffs (painted with puffin poop) once we made it there.

In this video, Vim pans the area with their camera, capturing the bright yellow lighthouse, the black, jagged cliffs, the roaring waters under them, the rocky landscape, and Laren worrying about two stray sheep visible from the pier.

In the end, we reasoned that the sheep, or “sneepies” as we called them throughout the trip,  would be okay on their own as they have sustenance, much land to traverse, and each other.
