Kókoskúlur & Kvernufoss

Waterfalls abound in Iceland. It felt like every time we looked out the car window there would be one (or multiple) in sight. With such an abundance, you might think they would become easily overlooked, but the more we saw, the more we realized that each waterfall has its own personality, energy, and magic.

Out of the many waterfalls we visited, Kvernufoss was our favorite.

Day four was nearing an end, and we were thinking of how best to spend our time before returning to the horse farm where we were staying that night. We were standing in a parking lot, looking at sheep and eating rich kókoskúlur (rum, chocolate, and coconut confections), when we noticed the entrance to a walking trail at the edge of the asphalt.

A scenic waterfall cascades down a rocky cliff surrounded by lush green hills under a bright sky. People stand nearby.

The trail became more and more magnificent the farther we walked, and the culmination was Kvernufoss, a mystical and breathtaking body of water tucked into the mountains that we could examine from all angles. It was the first time either of us had been behind a waterfall! The feeling is almost impossible to describe.

Laren in a pink jacket and knitted hat stands by a flowing river. They face a steep, rocky hillside covered in lush moss.

You can see the landscape around Kvernufoss in these photos- dynamic rock formations with blankets of moss and other greenery, glistening with moisture and intrigue.

Stumbling upon a sight like this is unforgettable, and we will always cherish our time with Kvernufoss.
